My mother had both ...I hope your mom will be fine. My mother had both knees done - one at a time, of course. The first time they knocked her out. But for the second knee, they made a boo boo and she was awake for the entire surgery, although they gave her local anesth. to remove any feeling in her leg while they did the surgery. She recovered quicker from the 2nd surgery, and needed less pain meds after surgery than for the first go-round! She said it was kind of creepy to be awake for surgery, but not half bad, just creepy!
